I made these 33x44 posters with pens and pieces from the Earth. The quotes come from the youth that participated this year.

		<description>Southeast Gladstone Street

I still need to confirm dates with my mom, but years ago when buying a home was only $25, my grandpa bought a condo, or townhouse, on Southeast Gladstone Street in Portland, Oregon.

Around the age of 7 or 8 I moved from Alaska back to Portland. My mom and I needed a place to live, and my mom's dad came to the rescue! From then on out, until the ripe old age of 24, I lived on this street.

A few years ago I decided to document this portion of the street—the corner of 39th and gladstone. The shops below, for the most part, have been there for as long as I can remember. I wanted to remember them forever because I knew it couldn't be long before they would disappear. They're probably not important to anyone, but there's meaning there for me. Some shops are new, but over the years have added a new life to the street.

The purpose of this venture was to remember, document and think. I didn't do a lot of talking, just a lot of shooting and thinking. This first hand documentation offers a closer look at a street that is often overlooked and unappreciated.

2011 was a big year for change, almost all of the below shops are now something else. I wonder if the kids who are now growing up on Gladstone will have this same nostalgic feeling as i do and will the new shops stand the test of time like the ones before?

Wise Buy Market was owned by a Korean family, but now a new family has moved in just this year (2011). My mom has been buying the Oregonian newspaper from this market my whole life.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_1_900.jpg" border="0" width="900" height="1304" width_o="900" height_o="1304" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_1_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

This is Tony, a really great person. He owned Tony's Antiques &#38; Collectibles, but also this year Tony moved on. He now focuses his energy on antique road shows. During his last days I came in to buy weird old paintings, vintage photographs, and other odds and ends.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_2_900.jpg" border="0" width="900" height="1354" width_o="900" height_o="1354" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_2_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

The man on the sidewalk was curious as to why I was photographing his shop, I'm pretty sure. The signage on the side of the building has always been beautiful!
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_3_900.jpg" border="0" width="900" height="598" width_o="900" height_o="598" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_3_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

This barber shop is still thriving and cute as can be. I've never been in, but from what I can tell really tough old guys work here and get their hair cut. I love the sign!
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_4_900.jpg" border="0" width="900" height="598" width_o="900" height_o="598" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_4_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

Again, great sign and typography. This shop closed down this year as well (2011). Oddly enough, a record store now occupies this space.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_5_900.jpg" border="0" width="900" height="598" width_o="900" height_o="598" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_5_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

From afar you can see the beauty of age, time and typography. You don't see spaces like this very often. I love seeing what time has done to a place; there's a lot of beauty that builds up to add meaning to an otherwise old building.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_7_900.jpg" border="0" width="900" height="598" width_o="900" height_o="598" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_7_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62;

The is the Barbar Shop from across the street. These guys thought it was funny that I was photographing the businesses on the street. The Gladstone Coffee actually used to be a furniture refinishing business, but not too many years ago it became this now popular pace to get coffee and pizza. I think this is a great addition to Gladstone, because before we had nothing like this near by.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_8_900.jpg" border="0" width="900" height="598" width_o="900" height_o="598" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/44549/2124768/gladstone_zilka_8_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; </description>

		<description>Great Adventure

This was an exploration of form and function. I brought together my interest in working with others (this being an application to intern for Jelly Helm), letter form, and the function of paper.

The details are important because within the details we see the thought and sincere interest people put into their work.

creative challenges

While at Portland State University, our student group, FoGD would present creative challenges. They'd post an image of a person, object or place—then ask us to create anything we'd like using the image. Below are my creations:

		<description>PROJECT:  WellDone
A collaborative effort

Welldone

This piece was created for my very good friend &#38; illustrator Kate Worum's curated show to support WellDone. Kate will be curating the works of mine and other creatives onto a poster that will be sold to raise money that will go directly to WellDone, bringing clean water to those who need it.

WellDone is a non profit organization that strives to harness the power of design in stimulating awareness on global water issues in a creative, head-turning way. They have raised money for 41 wells in Africa bringing clean and easy accessible water to many. My friend and Project M mate, Joshua To, is the Co-Founder &#38; Head of Development.

My mission was to use the topic of water and the WellDone logo to create a piece that shows my appreciation for water. I juxtaposed these vintage postcards with a playful iteration of the logo to showcase the need for water in the wild and in our cities.

Criteria:
6X6 square format
Can use Blue, Grey &#38;White
Illustration,design, poetry,photography, macrame weaving... ANYTHING GOES!

		<description>PROJECT: Waste Lab

Waste Lab is an on going project and experiment that has grown
from a Design Seminar course I am currently engaged in.

I am designing and coding the website, and created the mark.

Intent:
The intent was to create a high concept project that would
create awareness in wasting less. This is a personal
exploration that focuses on engaging people in wasting
less through entertaining videos that in turn challenges
them to do the same, or to submit their own ideas to Waste Lab.

Everyone loves a good challenge! By challenging Waste Lab with your
hypothesis, or submitting your own video, you're being engaged in
experiments that thoughtfully inspire people to think twice
before throwing something away, or how to switch it out
for  something permanent and sustainable.

This would create discourse among people, spreading
the word of Waste Lab and the variety of ways we've wasted less.
This then posses the question, "How can you waste less?"

Story:
In one year we will make a video a week to show people the variety of ways
you can reuse one time use products or switch them out for something more permanent.

Our experiments will be researched and taught for the manufacturing of wasting less ideas,
changes and discourse.

People are creative and people are thoughtful, our purchases can reflect this.

		<description>PROJECT: Conduit Cabaret

Conduit Cabaret is a fashion line by Megan Van Eaton. This was created to reflect her vintage inspired flare and elegant eye for style. She is a fashion designer in Portland, Oregon.

The hangtag uses a vintage postcard that represents the past and the image of the woman to represent the future: Meagan's clothes and designs. Fashion + Future is about your style and how it's been inspired.
